The Penticton Vees' season got the ending it deserved.

The Vees, who set BCHL marks for points (110), wins (54) and consecutive wins (42), beat New Brunswick's Woodstock Slammers 4-3 Sunday in Humboldt, Sask., to win the RBC Cup national Junior A championship.

Joey Benik bagged the winner with 51 seconds remaining in third period. The Slammers had taken a 3-2 lead on a Bradley Greene goal at 1:30 of the final frame, and Penticton had knotted the scored on a Bryce Gervais marker at 11:10.

The Vees become the third BCHL team in four years to win it all, following the Vernon Vipers, who were victorious in 2009 and 2010.

Travis St. Denis and Steven Fogarty had given the Vees a 2-0 lead Sunday with first- period goals. Greene, later in the first, and Nick Huard, in the second, tied it up for Woodstock.

Michael Garteig turned away 22 shots in the Penticton net, while Matt Murphy made 30 saves for Woodstock.

The Vees lost the first two games at the five-team national tournament, falling 2-1 to Ontario's Soo Thunderbirds and 3-2 to the host Humboldt Broncos, but then beat Woodstock 2-1 and Manitoba's Portage Terriers 3-1 to advance to the playoffs.

They beat the Thunderbirds 3-0 there, while the Slammers upset the previously unbeaten Broncos 4-3 in overtime to advance.

St. Denis ended up Penticton's leading scorer in the tournament, with seven points, including one goal, in five games. That was good enough for second overall. Mike Reilly was next best, at 13th overall, with four points, including one goal, in six games.

Reilly, a defenceman, was among the eight players on Penticton's roster from Minnesota. A fourth-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets last year, he was also one of three Penticton players chosen in the top 100 in the most recent NHL draft, along with forward Mario Lucia (second round, Minnesota Wild) and Fogarty (third round, New York Rangers).

Penticton went 54-4-0-2 in the regular season and had seven of the league's top nine scorers.

The previous best for consecutive wins in the BCHL belonged to the 1989-90 New Westminster Royals, who ripped off 29 straight wins. They also had a share of the league mark for victories (with the 1998-99 Vipers) and the points 108 (thanks to a 52-3-4 record). Oddly enough, they didn't win the RBC, blowing a 5-2 third-period lead to fall 6-5 in overtime to the host Vernon Lakers.
